Dear new students

To ensure the best possible preparation for the start of your studies, the University of Bern is organising introductory days from September 11 to 13, 2019. These days consist of a preparation workshop (Bachelor) and a freshers' day (Bachelor / Master). Participate and receive all the necessary information as well as helpful tips for your studies at the University of Bern!

The introductory days 2019 are taking place from September 11 to 13.

First-year bachelor students will be offered additional in-depth workshops to further their academic skills during their first academic year.

On Friday, september 13, the freshers' day for first-year students gives an introduction to studying at the University of Bern. He should give answers to open questions about the study and help to find his way around the University of Bern. The day also gives a picture of life at and around the university and offers the opportunity to make initial contacts.

After the official welcome by the Rector, introductory events in the faculties and institutes are on the agenda. In addition to the introduction to the study, it is possible to get to know the different university groups.

Are you just about to start your bachelor's degree program at the University of Bern and wondering if you are well prepared for this new chapter in your life? The preparation workshop provides you with lots of practical tips, so that you will be well equipped for the start of the first semester.

The University of Bern recommends that all first semester students attend the preparation workshop.


Learning strategies

In this module, you will learn specific learning and memory strategies which will make it easier for you to deal with the large quantity of subject matter during your studies. During this process, you will be given some practical tips on how to benefit most from lecture courses and seminars, amongst other things. 

Suggestions for successful studies

Studying brings new challenges with it. Here, you are given helpful tips on how to overcome them in practical terms. Among other things, you can find out how you can optimize your time management and stress management or how you can overcome unpleasant dwindling motivation and fear of exams. In this module, you will also get to know a selection of useful services for your daily studies (accommodation and job platform, legal advice, etc.).

Organizing your studies

To make sure that you are perfectly prepared for the organizational area of your studies, we naturally take a look at the frequently used platforms KSL (registration for courses and exams etc.) and ILIAS (teaching and learning platform).

To supplement the preparation workshop, the University of Bern offers first-year bachelor students in fall semester 2019 two in-depth workshops on the topics of “Learning Strategies” and “Time Management and Stress Management”. Attend and you will benefit in your daily studies from the knowledge acquired!

The workshops will be conducted by the Vice-Rectorate Teaching in cooperation with Synapso, the University of Bern’s Center of Learning and Memory.

Effective learning strategies for daily studies

Workshop on learning, memory and reading strategies

While we are studying, our brains are confronted with huge amounts of new information which has to be processed, memorized and recalled quickly. Get to know the right techniques to help your brain to learn in this 90-minute workshop! The event will give you answers to the following questions:

  • Which learning strategies can make learning easier for me during my studies?
  • What techniques are there to memorize different contents better (concepts, numbers, etc.)?
  • How can I read extensive factual texts more quickly and still successfully grasp the most important aspects?

The event builds on the preparatory workshop. However, no previous knowledge is required.

Stress-free studying

Workshop on time and stress management 

Many students report experiencing negative stress during their studies. It doesn’t have to be like that! Participate in this 90-minute workshop and learn important principles and easy-to-use strategies to deal with stress in your studies. The workshop provides answers to the following questions:

  • How do I get my time and goals under control?
  • What does a helpful study and learning plan look like?
  • How can I tackle the problem of procrastination?
  • How do I deal with stress and excessive demands?
